Mission Statement: To provide for and assist tribes in the development of their capacity to plan, construct and maintain safe and efficient transportation networks.
The Transportation Branch serves the 229 Federally-recognized tribes in Alaska Region by providing program management and oversight of the Tribal Transportation Program. Through the process of self-determination, self-governance or bilateral agreement, tribes pursue a wide variety of Transportation activities on a 25,000 mile inventory of existing and proposed routes. Under the program, tribes undertake long range planning, road maintenance, design, construction, transit operations, etc. The branch provides funding, technical assistance, training, on-site monitoring, contract administration, etc. to help Tribes succeed in tribal transportation. The program provides jobs, enhances local economies, and improves safety and quality of life for Alaska Natives throughout the region.
